Overview

The School of Biosystems & Biomedical Sciences at Korea University operates an integrated education and research system that organically connects basic biomedical sciences with bio and food science-related disciplines. Through this, it aims to cultivate global leaders who will drive the biomedical science and bio–food industries—fields with immense potential as future growth engines.

Health Designer, the School of Biosystems & Biomedical Sciences

Humanity has continuously pursued a healthy and happy life. The School of Biosystems & Biomedical Sciences is a field that seeks to understand the fundamental principles sustaining life and apply them to benefit human life, while also developing and providing scientific methods applicable to industry. Accordingly, the School of Biosystems & Biomedical Sciences investigates the fundamental nature of life phenomena at microscopic and analytical levels, including cells and molecules. Based on this, the School of Biosystems & Biomedical Sciences conducts comprehensive and multidisciplinary research from studying biodiversity and identifying disease-causing factors influenced by genetic and environmental factors, to biomarker-based diagnostics, development of pharmaceuticals and cell therapies, functional studies of food and natural materials, food safety and hazards, physicochemical properties of food components, and improving quality of life through better dietary practices, ultimately contributing to disease prevention and the promotion of human health.

Fields of Study

Life phenomena, which form the foundation of health, are highly complex; therefore, without understanding the interactions within organisms, a complete interpretation is not possible. Thus, studying life phenomena requires not only an interest in fundamental disciplines such as biology, physics, genetics, and molecular and cellular biology, but also a comprehensive understanding and approach to applied fields such as population genetics, food science, nutrition, toxicology, food culture, sociology, environmental science, and ecology. The School of Biosystems & Biomedical Science seeks to interpret the principles and phenomena of life and to understand the relationships between living organisms and their surrounding environments, by educating and conducting research on life phenomena across all levels, from the smallest molecular scale to large population-level systems.

Biopharmaceutical Industry

Humanity has continuously pursued a healthy and happy life. The School of Biosystems & Biomedical Science is a field that seeks to understand the fundamental principles of life, apply them for the benefit of human life, and develop scientific methods that can be utilized in industry. Accordingly, the division investigates the fundamental nature of life phenomena at microscopic and analytical levels, including cells and molecules. Based on this, the division conducts comprehensive and multidisciplinary research, from studying biodiversity and identifying disease-causing factors influenced by genetic and environmental factors, to biomarker-based diagnostics, development of pharmaceuticals and cell therapies, functional studies of food and natural materials, food safety and hazards, physicochemical properties of food components, and improving quality of life through better dietary practices and ultimately contributing to disease prevention and the promotion of human health.

Bio-Food Industry

The bio-food industry is a key national growth engine and an interdisciplinary field integrating multiple scientific and technological domains. With recent advances in bio-food science and a growing emphasis on health-oriented values, a wide range of foods enhanced with nutrition, palatability, safety, and functional health benefits have become major research subjects. Bio-foods with diverse physiological functions are expected to play a significant role in the future biotechnology market alongside pharmaceuticals. Bio-food science will play a central role in commercializing these innovations into food products.
